Help Without Borders is a Slovak dedicated civic association focused on supporting people in Africa through sustainable, transparent, and community-driven initiatives.
Why Supporting People in Africa Matters
Africa is a continent full of life, culture, and immense human potential. At the same time, it is a region where most of the world’s extreme poverty is concentrated. According to international organizations, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of people living on less than $2.15 a day, the threshold defined by the United Nations as extreme poverty.
Behind this definition are not abstract numbers. They are mothers who have nothing to feed their children. Children who sit by a dry well instead of in a classroom. Elderly people dying from diseases that, in Europe, could be treated with a single tablet.
Decades of colonial history, political instability, corruption, climate change, and armed conflict have created a spiral effect in many African countries that cannot be broken without external assistance. In Slovakia, we have access to healthcare, education, clean water, and social safety nets that support us when we fall. For a large part of the African population, these certainties do not exist.
That is why we are here. That is why we exist.
Our Mission
Our civic association was founded on a simple conviction: every person — regardless of where they are born — deserves a life of dignity. Not charity as a token gesture. Not compassion without action. But concrete, meaningful, and responsible help that changes lives.
We are Slovaks. We understand the value of solidarity — we know what it means to receive a helping hand in difficult times. And we know that when people come together, they can achieve what individuals cannot.
Our work is built on three pillars:
- DIRECT ASSISTANCE
We focus on communities where the need is greatest. We support projects that bring immediate relief — food, clean water, healthcare, and hygiene supplies for families in crisis. - LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT
We believe real help does not end with a one-time package. We support children’s education, the development of local capacities, and projects that help communities become self-sufficient. - TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Every euro entrusted to us is tracked, and we can tell you where it goes. We cooperate with verified partners on the ground who understand local needs and conditions better than anyone from outside.
The Problems Faced by Africans
Hunger and malnutrition
Malnutrition is one of the most severe yet least visible crises in the modern world. According to estimates by international organizations, hundreds of millions of people suffer from chronic hunger, with Africa bearing a disproportionate share of this burden. Children are especially vulnerable — nearly half of all deaths of children under five are linked to malnutrition.
Malnutrition is not just a matter of a thin body. It is a systemic issue that destroys the future. A child who suffers from chronic nutrient deficiency in early life will not reach full physical growth, will have a weakened immune system, and will suffer irreversible damage to brain development. These children grow up with limited ability to learn, earn, and contribute to their communities. Poverty is thus passed from generation to generation like an untreated disease.
Access to drinking water
Water is life. This phrase sounds trivial — until one realizes that for millions of Africans, running water is not a given, but a distant aspiration. Women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa walk several kilometers every day to fetch water from the nearest source — water that is often contaminated and directly threatens their health.
The lack of safe drinking water and sanitation is a direct cause of the spread of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and parasitic infections. These illnesses are easily treatable in European conditions. In environments without doctors, medicine, and hospitals, they are deadly, especially for young children.
Healthcare
Access to basic healthcare in many African countries is a privilege, not a right. Hospitals, where they exist, are overcrowded, under-equipped, and often inaccessible — both geographically and financially. In some regions, a single doctor serves thousands of patients.
Diseases that are routinely manageable in Slovakia — malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia, infections — claim hundreds of thousands of lives each year here. Pregnant women give birth without professional assistance, and newborns die from causes that modern medicine could easily address. Vaccination systems that have protected European children from polio or measles remain unavailable or unreliable in many African communities.
Education and Development
We believe that quality education is the most powerful tool for change. When a child has the opportunity to attend school, the likelihood increases that they will secure more stable employment in adulthood, better care for their family, and become an active member of society. Yet this path is blocked in many African countries.
The reasons vary: schools may be located dozens of kilometers away, families cannot afford fees or basic supplies, and in unstable regions schools are closed or destroyed. As a result, entire generations grow up illiterate, with no prospects, and without the means to change their own fate.

There are several ways to get involved:

- Become a member — Do you want to be part of something larger? Membership in our association is not just a formality. It is a commitment and a community of people who share the same values.
- Corporate partnerships and CSR — Are you a company or entrepreneur? Working with us is not only socially responsible, but meaningful. We will help design a project that has real impact while reflecting your brand’s values.
- 2 % of your tax — Each year, you can allocate 2 % of your paid tax to support our association. It costs you nothing — the money would otherwise go to the state budget. Now it can change someone’s life.
